Hot Water, a men's scent released by Davidoff in 2009, is a warm, herbal woody with an unusual spice at its heart. Everyone who describes it calls it woody, and about half add resinous, aromatic or amber.

It opens with basil and wormwood, so the first minutes are green, bitter and herbal, closer to an aperitif than to a citrus cologne. The heart pairs patchouli, earthy and slightly damp, with paprika, which gives a dry, dusty, smoky heat rather than a sharp pepper bite. The base is two resins, benzoin and styrax, which bring a balsamic, slightly sweet, faintly leathery warmth and give the drydown its amber-like glow.

Most wearers find both longevity and sillage moderate, with a minority calling the sillage intimate, so it stays fairly close. It is voted for winter and autumn and leans towards night, which fits a warm, spiced scent for cold evenings and for someone who prefers herbs and resins to freshness or sweetness.
