Lemon, citron and grapefruit open it with a bright, bitter-edged zest, and verbena with lemon verbena doubles the lemon with a greener, leafier version of it. Tarragon adds an aniseed, herbal note that gives the opening a savoury edge, and cardamom a cool, aromatic spice. The base keeps it dry: cedar brings a crisp, pencil-like wood, guaiac wood a smokier, slightly tarry one, and oakmoss a cool, damp depth that lends the finish its faintly leathery feel.
