1681 by the Italian house Carthusia, released in 2010, is a spiced, herbal cologne with an ambery finish. Everyone who describes it calls it spicy; two thirds also find it woody, floral, aromatic, ambery and citrusy, which tells you how evenly balanced it is.

Bergamot, mandarin and petitgrain open it in classic eau de cologne style, bright and slightly bitter. Rosemary, thyme and lavender add a dry, aromatic herb-garden freshness, and black pepper and coriander give a warm, dry spice that runs through the heart. Neroli and iris sit in the middle, adding orange-blossom freshness and a touch of powder. The base is warmer than a cologne usually allows: sandalwood and cedar bring a smooth woodiness, incense a dry smokiness, and amber, vanilla and musk a soft, resinous warmth that lasts.

It is positioned as a masculine fragrance. The herbal, citrus opening suits daytime and warmer weather, while the amber base gives it enough body for cooler evenings; it suits people who like traditional Mediterranean colognes with more staying power.
