Black Sukar from Xerjoff, composed by Chris Maurice in 2012, is a soft rose with oud, peony and a clean musky base. Everyone who describes it calls it floral, about half also notice musk, and a minority mention spice, sweetness, wood and citrus.

Orange and pink pepper give the opening a juicy, bright and rosy sparkle. The heart is a delicate bouquet: Damask rose brings a velvety, honeyed petal note, peony a fresh, airy rosiness and freesia a light, slightly peppery sweetness. Agarwood runs underneath, adding a dark, resinous woodiness that gives the flowers depth. The base is smooth and soft, with vanilla adding a gentle sweetness and white musk and musk a clean, skin-close finish.

Unisex in spirit, it suits people who like rose-oud fragrances where the flowers lead and the oud stays in the background. Sukar means sugar, and the profile works for spring and autumn, evenings and special occasions. Those who enjoy soft, musky roses with a hint of oud should find it elegant and easy to wear.
