Freudian Wood, composed by Mark Buxton for the Austrian house WienerBlut in 2016, is a creamy woody fragrance with spice, musk and resin. Everyone who describes it calls it woody, and about half also notice spice, gourmand sweetness, musk, resin and amber.

Cypress gives the opening a green, coniferous dryness, and cumin a warm, slightly savoury, skin-like spice. Costus, an unusual root, adds an earthy, animalic, almost waxy warmth. Mimosa brings a soft, powdery, honeyed floral note. The core is creamy and smooth: milk adds a soft, rounded texture and sandalwood a milky, gentle woodiness. The base is warm and close, with labdanum and amber giving an ambery resin and ambrette a musky, pear-like softness.

Unisex in spirit, it suits people who like intimate, slightly animalic woods with a creamy feel. The profile points to autumn and winter, evenings and close occasions. Those who enjoy milky sandalwood with a musky, cumin-tinged warmth should find it intriguing and comforting.
