Polo, created by Carlos Benaïm for Ralph Lauren in 1978, is a green, woody, pine-and-tobacco scent for men. Wood and flowers are noticed equally by everyone, most wearers also find it spicy, about half aromatic, and a quarter leathery or citrusy.

The opening is sharp and herbal: juniper berries, basil, artemisia, coriander and caraway with bergamot. The heart is dominated by pine needles and leather, with chamomile, pepper and carnation adding a dry, spicy warmth and geranium, jasmine and rose a floral note that reads as bitter-green rather than pretty. The base is tobacco, oakmoss and patchouli over cedar, vetiver, musk and amber, earthy, mossy and faintly smoky.

Most people find it long lasting, and half report strong sillage, so it carries. It is voted for autumn and winter and evenly for day and night. It suits men who want a traditional, outdoorsy scent with a mossy, pine-forest character.
