Privé by Ormonde Jayne, released in 2018, is a creamy white floral with a soft, milky-rice undertone. Floral is the word everyone uses; just under half also find it gourmand and citrusy, and smaller groups spicy, green or ambery.

Bergamot, green mandarin and petitgrain open it with a bright, slightly bitter citrus, sharpened by pink pepper and coriander and given a tart twist by blackcurrant. The heart is a generous bouquet: gardenia, jasmine and magnolia bring creamy, heady white flowers, osmanthus an apricot-like softness and freesia a peppery freshness. Basmati rice is the unusual element, adding a warm, starchy, comforting smell that links the flowers to the base of sandalwood, tonka bean and vanilla, with orris for powder and ambroxan and musk for a long, clean, ambery tail.

It is a shared fragrance, worn by anyone. The creaminess suggests evening wear and cooler months more than hot days, and it suits people who like rich white florals softened with something comforting rather than sharp.
