Dark Aoud from Montale, released in 2011 and composed by Pierre Montale, is a straightforward woody oud. People describe it simply as woody, and the note list is just as direct: agarwood and sandalwood.
The oud carries it, dark, resinous and medicinal, with the slightly animalic, smoky depth that defines the material. Sandalwood is there to smooth it out, adding a creamy, milky softness that takes some of the edge off and gives the drydown a warmer, rounder feel. There is no fruit, flower or citrus to distract from the two woods.
