Cuir Grenat by L'Artisan Parfumeur, released in 2023 and composed by Christophe Raynaud, is a raspberry leather: everyone who describes it names gourmand and leather together, and nothing else. With just three listed notes, it is a study in contrast.
Raspberry gives the opening its juicy, tart sweetness, bright and slightly jammy. Leather follows almost at once, smoky and supple, and the two sit side by side rather than in sequence: the fruit sweetens the leather and the leather keeps the fruit from becoming sugary. Ambrofix, an ambergris-like material, provides the base, a warm, mineral, slightly salty glow that extends both the fruit and the leather and gives the fragrance a smooth, lasting skin scent.
It is a shared fragrance, worn by anyone. The leather and sweetness point to autumn and winter, evenings and occasions where a distinctive scent is welcome, though its simplicity keeps it wearable by day. Cuir Grenat suits people who enjoy leather fragrances and want one with a playful, fruity side rather than a severe one.
