Released by Hugo Boss in 1985 and composed by Pierre Wargnye, Boss Number One is a classic masculine of its era: floral at its core, aromatic for most people, with woody and citrus sides and a spicy, honeyed sweetness that a minority pick out.

The opening is busy and bright, lemon and bergamot with juniper, basil and a crisp green apple. The heart is a traditional bouquet, rose and lavender with honey, geranium and sage, which reads as barbershop florals rather than anything sweet. The base is where it gets its depth: oakmoss and patchouli with tobacco, amber and a little cinnamon, warm, earthy and old-fashioned in the best sense.

About half of wearers report long-lasting performance, and the sillage is split fairly evenly between moderate and strong, so apply with some care. It is voted for autumn and winter and worn equally by day and night, a scent for someone who likes the structured, mossy style of the eighties.
