Drakkar Noir, created by Pierre Wargnye for Guy Laroche in 1982, is a classic aromatic woody scent for men. Woods come first, then herbs and citrus, with spicy, green and floral facets around them.

The opening is bright and herbal at once: lemon, bergamot and mint with lavender, basil and rosemary, a clean, sharp start. The heart adds wormwood and juniper for a bitter, gin-like edge, cinnamon and coriander for warmth, and a little carnation and jasmine for softness. The base is deep and mossy, with oakmoss, vetiver, patchouli and leather over sandalwood, cedar, pine needles and amber, giving a dry, slightly smoky finish.

People mostly report moderate longevity and a moderate trail. It is voted for winter and autumn and splits evenly between day and night. It suits someone who wants a sharply groomed, traditional scent with a mossy, woody depth rather than anything sweet.
