Red, composed by Bob Aliano for Giorgio Beverly Hills in 1989, is a big, rich floral with a fruity, aldehydic opening and a warm, mossy base. Flowers lead, a good share of people notice sweetness and woods, and a minority mention freshness, herbs and citrus.
The opening is dense and vivid: black currant, cherry and peach give ripe, red fruitiness, osmanthus an apricot-like floral glow, and aldehydes a bright, soapy sparkle. The heart is a full bouquet, with rose, carnation, jasmine, gardenia and tuberose creating a creamy, spicy and heady floral core. The base brings vetiver, sandalwood, vanilla, tonka bean and oakmoss, a warm, sweet and mossy finish.
Many wearers find it long lasting, and a fair number call it eternal, while over half describe the sillage as strong. It is voted mainly for autumn and winter and clearly for evening. That suits evenings out and formal occasions, for anyone who loves a bold late-1980s floral.
