A fresh citrus scent with an unexpectedly sweet, woody base, Acqua di Gioia was released by Giorgio Armani in 2010 and composed by Dominique Ropion, Anne Flipo and Loc Dong. Everyone who describes it agrees on fresh, citrus and aromatic, but equally on gourmand, woody and amber, which tells you it is not a simple splash of lemon.

It opens with Amalfi lemon and a cool thread of mint, bright and slightly bracing. The heart is a single flower, water jasmine, which smells dewy and clean rather than heavy. The base brings the surprise: brown sugar adds a soft caramel sweetness, Virginia cedar a dry pencil-shaving woodiness, and French labdanum a warm, resinous depth.

Most wearers report moderate longevity, and about a quarter find it weak; the trail is moderate to intimate. It is voted for summer and spring, and strongly for daytime. It suits warm days and anyone who wants freshness with a sweet, comforting dry-down rather than a sharp finish.
