Estee by Estée Lauder, composed by Bernard Chant and Betty Busse, is a classic floral chypre listed as feminine. Floral is the accord every wearer names; about a third also find it gourmand, and a minority describe spicy, woody, fresh and citrus sides.
The opening is grand and old-school: aldehydes give a sparkling, slightly soapy lift, lemon and coriander add brightness and spice, and raspberry and peach bring soft fruit, while tuberose, lily and ylang-ylang set a heady floral tone from the start. The heart is a full bouquet of jasmine, rose, lily of the valley and carnation, with orris root and iris adding a cool, powdery elegance and honey a warm, slightly animal sweetness. The base of oakmoss, styrax, sandalwood and cedar is dry, earthy and resinous in the chypre tradition.
It suits formal occasions, evenings and cooler months, and it rewards wearers who appreciate traditional, structured perfumery with aldehydes and moss rather than modern sweetness.
