La Tulipe is Byredo's attempt, from 2010, to capture a flower that has almost no scent of its own; it was composed by Jérôme Epinette with Ben Gorham. Wearers describe it as woody and floral in equal parts, and it is a feminine scent in a fresh, transparent style.
Rhubarb opens it, tart and green, with cyclamen and freesia adding a crisp, watery floral brightness. The heart is pink tulip, which here means a soft, slightly vegetal flower note, more about the feel of petals and stems than about perfume-counter sweetness. The base is green notes, vetiver and woody notes, keeping the drydown dry, stalky and faintly earthy, like the bottom of a vase of fresh-cut flowers.
Most wearers report moderate longevity and about a fifth find it weak, with sillage moderate for the majority. Spring collects more than half of the season votes, summer most of the rest, and it is almost exclusively worn by day. It is a fragrance for bright mornings and anyone who prefers florals clean rather than sweet.
