Atkinsons His Majesty The Oud, from the British house in 2016, is a woody oud fragrance with a distinctly tea-like character. Woody is the word everyone uses; about two thirds also call it green, and a minority find it spicy, gourmand and leathery.

Laotian oud gives the backbone, a deep, slightly smoky wood, but it is kept polished rather than raw. Black tea brings the dry, tannic, faintly bitter green quality that sets this apart from richer ouds. Cloves add a warm, old-fashioned spice, and leather a smooth, dry suppleness. Cedar and sandalwood extend the woody side, cedar dry and clean, sandalwood creamier, while vanilla and liquidambar soften the base with a gentle, balsamic sweetness.

This is a masculine scent for cooler weather and evenings, measured and dressed rather than overtly sweet. It should appeal to men who like oud presented in a restrained, tailored way, with tea and spice doing much of the talking.
