Opus XIV – Royal Tobacco, a 2022 Amouage fragrance worn by anyone, is resinous above all; more than half of wearers also call it woody, floral and aromatic, with spicy and amber sides for a good number.
The opening is herbal and smoky: basil, anise and cardamom bring a green, liquorice-tinged spice, bergamot a citrus lift, and frankincense with elemi a bright, peppery resin. The heart centres on tobacco, dry and honeyed, dressed with liquorice, fenugreek, osmanthus, rose, orange blossom and lavender, so sweet, floral and aromatic threads run together. The base is enormous: frankincense, myrrh, benzoin, labdanum and Peru balsam for resin, birch tar for smoke, oud and guaiac wood for depth, vanilla and tonka bean for sweetness.
Half of wearers call it long lasting and two fifths say it lasts indefinitely. Sillage is strong for more than half and enormous for a quarter. It is voted for winter and autumn and three quarters of the time for night.
