Musc Ambre Gris from the French house Affinessence, released in 2017, is a woody, earthy musk. Everyone who describes it calls it woody, about two-thirds musky, and a third green or ambery.

The eight notes are listed together, and they are unusual. Mate gives a dry, green, tea-like opening. Truffle brings an earthy, savoury, almost edible depth that is rare in perfumery. Haitian vetiver and vetiver add a rooty, grassy dryness, and patchouli a dark, damp earthiness. Ambergris lends its salty, warm, skin-like glow, and the base is finished with musk and black musk, the latter deeper and more animalic than the clean white kind.

Musc Ambre Gris is shared and worn by anyone. It is best suited to cooler weather and to the evening, and to someone who likes musks with an earthy, natural character rather than fresh or soapy ones. It is sold in a 50 ml bottle.
