Lemon, bergamot and mandarin orange give the opening a sharp, sunny sparkle, while elemi adds a lemony, peppery resin and violet leaf a crisp, green freshness. Cloves bring a warm, slightly medicinal spice. The heart and base are rich in resins: incense gives a dry, smoky haze, myrrh a bittersweet, balsamic depth, labdanum a sticky, ambery warmth and benzoin and Tolu balsam a sweet, vanilla-like glow. Cedar, vetiver and patchouli provide a dry, earthy, woody frame.
