Givrine, from the French house E. Coudray, dates from 1950 and was composed by Evelyne Boulanger; it is marketed to women. Everyone who describes it calls it floral, three quarters add woody, about half find it citrus, and a minority mention musky and fresh.
Bergamot and kumquat open it with a bright, slightly bitter citrus, and watermelon adds a cool, watery sweetness that keeps it light. The heart is a spring bouquet: lily of the valley, dewy and green; peony, rosy and fresh; violet, powdery and sweet; and gardenia, creamy and heady. The base turns dry and clean, with sandalwood and white woods providing a smooth wooden frame, patchouli a touch of earth and musk a soft finish.
It reads as a fresh, polite floral with more wood than most, suited to daytime and the warmer half of the year. Anyone who likes classic flower-garden scents should find it easy to wear.
