Ylang-ylang is the whole subject of Coeur d'Ylang, a Comptoir Sud Pacifique fragrance composed by Thomas Fontaine and released in 2016 for women. Everyone who describes it calls it floral, and about half also find it gourmand, ambery and citrus.
Bergamot opens it with a brief, bright citrus lift that keeps the first minutes from being too heavy. Ylang-ylang then takes over, creamy, slightly banana-like and sweet, with frangipani beside it adding a softer, more tropical, faintly peachy floral tone. The base leans sweet and warm: vanilla for a rich, familiar sweetness and Peru balsam for a resinous, cinnamon-tinged warmth that gives the drydown its amber feel.
Rich and sunny, it suits warm evenings and holiday wear, or winter days when a bit of tropical warmth is welcome. It should please anyone who likes big white flowers with a creamy, vanilla-leaning finish.
