Chopard Rose Malaki pairs rose with dry wood and a thread of spice. People describe it as woody and floral in equal measure, and about half add spicy. Amandine Clerc-Marie composed it for Chopard in 2014, and it is worn by anyone.

The rose here is Damask rose, the rich, slightly honeyed, faintly jammy kind rather than a light tea rose, and it gives the scent its warmth and depth. Saffron is the spice, bringing a leathery, slightly medicinal, golden-hued edge that sits naturally beside rose and tilts the whole thing towards a Middle Eastern style of rose perfumery. Cedar and Atlas cedar provide the woody frame, dry, clean and pencil-like, which keeps the rose from becoming heavy or sugary and gives the drydown a smooth, slightly austere finish.

A focused, grown-up rose with little sweetness and no fruit, suited to anyone who likes rose with woods and spice rather than with berries or vanilla.
