Aramis, launched in 1966 and composed by Bernard Chant, is presented as masculine and is equally woody and floral, with a strong spicy side and smaller fresh, resinous and citrus touches.

The opening is complex and bitter-fresh: bergamot gives a citrus lift, aldehydes a sparkling clean note, and artemisia a dry, herbal bitterness. In the heart, cardamom brings aromatic spice and orris root a powdery elegance. The base is where the classic leather-chypre character lies: leather gives a smooth, slightly smoky warmth, oakmoss a damp, mossy depth and vetiver an earthy dryness that carries the composition for hours.

Wearers generally report long-lasting wear, and many describe its sillage as strong. It is voted mainly for autumn and winter, and almost evenly between night and day. It suits formal occasions, the office and evenings, for someone who likes a classic 1960s leather chypre with herbs and moss, and who appreciates a bold, traditional masculine style.
