Opus XIII – Silver Oud, released by Amouage in 2021 and composed by Cécile Zarokian, is a dark woody oud fragrance. Woods dominate, with leather at about half that strength and a touch of sweetness.
The opening is dry and earthy: nagarmotha gives a smoky, slightly leathery root note, Virginia cedar a clean woodiness and patchouli an earthy depth. The heart is oud with Madagascar vanilla, a pairing of dark, resinous wood and creamy sweetness that softens the oud's medicinal edge. The base is deep and animalic, with castoreum giving a leathery warmth, birch a smoky, tar-like dryness, guaiac wood a smoky resin and ambrarome a warm, ambery glow.
Performance is exceptional by most accounts: about half say it lasts far beyond a day, and the sillage is mostly strong. It is voted for winter and autumn and is mainly an evening scent. It suits formal cold-weather evenings and anyone who loves smoky, leathery oud. It is worn by anyone.
