Lemon gives the opening a clean, bright sharpness, and ginger follows with a fresh, zesty, slightly hot spice that extends the citrus feeling while adding warmth. The pair then settle onto a base of sandalwood and patchouli: the sandalwood creamy, smooth and a little milky, the patchouli earthy, dark and faintly chocolatey. The contrast between the fresh, spiced top and the warm, grounded base is the whole idea, and because there are so few notes, each stage is easy to follow as it develops on the skin.
Rhizome 03 is worn by anyone. Its clean, warm character suits spring and autumn and everyday wear, and it should appeal to someone who wants a simple, well-made woody scent with a fresh start and nothing sweet about it.
