Mandarin opens it with a brief, sweet-sharp citrus. Then orris root takes over: it is the dried rhizome of the iris, and it smells cool, powdery and faintly of suede, which is where the name comes from. Rose and jasmine give the orris a soft floral body. The resins are the second pillar: frankincense and elemi bring a dry, lemony, church-incense quality, and labdanum a warm, leathery amber. Cedar and patchouli close it with dry wood and a little earth.
It is worn by anyone. The powdery-incense character suits autumn and winter and evening wear, and a person who likes quiet, textured fragrances that smell more like good fabric than like flowers in a vase.
