Rocabar is a woody masculine from Hermès, composed by Gilles Romey and released in 1998. Wood is the backbone, with spice, a floral thread and citrus each noted by about half of those who describe it, and a smaller resinous, ambery warmth underneath.
It opens bright and dry, lemon and bergamot for lift and juniper for a gin-like crispness, with cedar setting the woody tone early. The heart turns spicier, carnation bringing a clove-like warmth and cardamom a gentle heat, softened by a powdery touch of violet. The base is where it settles: benzoin brings a sweet, resinous glow, while oakmoss and patchouli keep it earthy to the end.
Most wearers report moderate longevity, with some finding it long lasting, and a moderate to fairly noticeable sillage. It is voted mainly for autumn and winter, and splits evenly between day and night, which suits a cool-weather fragrance for work as much as an evening out.
