Yatagan by the French house Caron, released in 1978 and composed by Vincent Marcello, is a bitter, green, aromatic woody scent with an animalic base, positioned as a masculine fragrance. Woody and aromatic impressions are shared by everyone who describes it; about two thirds also find it green, and a minority notice fresh, amber or leather sides.
Pine, galbanum and basil give a sharp, resinous, bitter-green opening, with watercress, lavender and mint adding a cool, peppery herbal freshness. The heart is oakmoss, oak and artemisia, a dry, damp-forest bitterness that is unusual by modern standards, with patchouli adding earthy depth. Castoreum, incense and woodsy notes form the base, leathery, smoky and faintly animalic, with musk smoothing the finish.
Most wearers find Yatagan moderate to long lasting with a moderate projection. It is voted mainly for autumn and winter and splits fairly evenly between day and night, suiting a cool-weather scent for someone who appreciates uncompromising, old-school green masculines.
