Montecristo is a Masque Milano masculine from 2013, composed by Delphine Thierry. Woody is the word everyone uses for it, about two thirds also call it resinous, and a third find it musky, aromatic or ambery.
The opening is rum with ambrette, a boozy, dry start with a soft, vegetal musk underneath. The heart is tobacco and celery seeds, an unusual pairing that gives the tobacco a savoury, slightly salty, herbal edge rather than a sweet one, with labdanum adding resinous warmth. The base is dark and animalic: hyrax brings a leathery, slightly feral depth, styrax a smoky resin, and cedar and patchouli a dry, earthy wood.
Most people report long-lasting performance, and the projection is moderate for most, so it is dense but not loud. It is voted for autumn and winter and splits almost evenly between day and night.
