Habit Rouge Eau de Parfum from Guerlain, released in 2003 and composed by Jean-Paul Guerlain, is a citrus-topped oriental for men. People describe it as woody and citrus in equal measure, floral for most, with resinous, spicy and aromatic facets for a minority.
It opens with a bright mix of lemon, lime, bergamot, orange and tangerine, sharpened by basil and given a dry, rosy wood by Brazilian redwood. The heart is rose and carnation with jasmine, warmed by cinnamon and set on cedar, sandalwood and patchouli, so the flowers feel spiced and powdery. The base is deep: vanilla, benzoin and amber for a sweet, resinous warmth, leather and oakmoss for dryness, and labdanum and a trace of oud for a dark, animalic finish.
Most wearers report long-lasting performance and most find the sillage moderate. It is voted for autumn and winter and slightly more for day than night, which suits someone who likes a formal, old-school warmth.
