Grey Flannel, a men's classic from Geoffrey Beene composed by André Fromentin in 1975, is a green, violet-led floral in the old-fashioned sense: everyone describes it as floral, close to half add green, and smaller groups mention sweet, woody, citrus or aromatic facets.

It opens sharp and bitter-green, with galbanum setting a cut-stem, sappy tone over bergamot, lemon, neroli and petitgrain. The heart is a bouquet rarely found in men's scents today: violet and iris give a cool, powdery, slightly earthy character, with mimosa, rose and narcissus adding a soft floral sweetness and geranium and sage a herbal snap. The base is dry and sober, with vetiver, cedar and oakmoss providing a woody, mossy floor and tonka bean and almond a faint, nutty warmth.

About half of wearers report it as long lasting, and sillage is split between moderate and strong. It is voted mainly for autumn and winter and slightly more for daytime, which suits a tailored, understated scent for cooler weather.
