The original L'Ombre Dans L'Eau Eau de Toilette dates from 1983 and is one of Diptyque's earliest fragrances, composed by Serge Kalouguine. In this version people describe citrus first, with about half also noticing green, floral, sweet, musky and amber facets, so it reads as a brighter, more sparkling take than the eau de parfum.
The notes are listed as one set. Bergamot and mandarin orange give the opening its citrus lift, while black currant leaf adds a sharp, green tang. Black currant itself brings a tart, slightly sweet fruitiness, and rose sits at the centre, fresh rather than heavy. Musk and ambergris form the soft, warm background, keeping the whole thing close to the skin.
Most wearers find both the longevity and the sillage moderate, so it is a gentle scent that needs reapplying rather than one that fills a room. Spring and summer take most of the votes, and it is almost entirely a daytime fragrance, well suited to warm, bright days.
