Original Santal, a 2005 Creed fragrance worn by anyone, was composed by Pierre Bourdon with Olivier Creed and Erwin Creed. Wearers describe it as spicy, woody, floral, aromatic and citrusy all at once, with a gourmand side for about half.
The opening is busy and bright: bergamot and mandarin orange for citrus, ginger and coriander for a fresh, warm spice, juniper berries and rosemary for a crisp, gin-like aromatic edge. The heart is where the name is earned: sandalwood, creamy and smooth, is joined by lavender, geranium and orange blossom, so the wood comes with a clean floral lift. The base of tonka bean, musk, cedar and oakmoss adds a sweet, hay-like warmth, a dry wood and a faint mossy depth.
Longevity divides between long lasting and moderate. Sillage is moderate for three quarters. It is voted for autumn and then spring and almost evenly for day and night, which suits a warm, spiced wood that works across much of the year.
