Illegal

Illegal is a green, herbal woody scent marketed for men from the Dutch house Salle Privée, released in 2021. Woody is how everyone describes it, about half also find it spicy, and a quarter notice musk, flowers or leather, which fits a dry, slightly unusual composition with a few provocative touches.

Ginger and cardamom open it, the ginger warm and zesty, the cardamom cool and slightly green, with absinthe adding a bitter, aniseed-tinged, herbal sharpness that gives the start its edge. The heart is where the name earns itself: a cannabis note brings a green, resinous, slightly skunky herbal quality, and geranium beside it adds a rosy, minty freshness that keeps it from feeling heavy. The base is dry and smoky, with guaiac wood for a smoky, slightly sweet wood, cashmere wood for a soft, musky warmth, vetiver for a rooty dryness, leather for a smooth, slightly animalic richness, and ambrette for a soft, plant-derived musk.
