Mandarin and cardamom open it with a bright, peppery warmth, and lavender and clary sage give the first minutes an aromatic, slightly herbal edge. Cinnamon and nutmeg then build the spice, with a touch of caramel to smooth it. The lasting impression comes from the base: frankincense adds a dry, smoky, church-like quality, labdanum and amber bring resinous warmth, and cedar, cypress and vetiver keep it rooted in wood rather than sugar.
