Marte 61, a 1997 fragrance from the Italian house Battistoni, is an aromatic citrus musk of the classic masculine kind. Everyone who describes it calls it musky, floral, aromatic and citrus at once, and about half add green and amber.

Bergamot and mandarin open it with a bright, sweet citrus, and mint and juniper add a cool, gin-like sharpness. Lavender brings the aromatic, barbershop note. The heart is lighter and more floral than most men's scents of its era: freesia, peppery and watery, and magnolia, lemony and creamy. The base is a soft chypre: oakmoss gives a cool, damp greenness, opoponax a sweet, balsamic resin, tonka bean a smooth sweetness, and white musk and musk a clean, skin-like finish.

Marketed for men, it suits spring and summer and daytime wear, and a person who likes the fresh, clean style of the late nineties with a little more floral softness than usual.
