Patchouli Oud from the French house Affinessence, composed by Nicolas Bonneville and released in 2015, does what its name says: a woody, resinous pairing of two deep materials. Everyone who describes it calls it woody, about half resinous, and a quarter green or ambery.
The eight notes are listed together. Elemi gives a peppery, slightly citrus resin at the opening, and incense a dry, church-like smokiness. Patchouli is earthy, dark and a little sweet; Laotian oud is dense and resinous. Around them, guaiac wood adds a smoky, tarry woodiness, vetiver a dry, rooty earthiness, oakmoss a damp forest-floor note, and labdanum a warm, ambery sweetness that rounds the base.
Patchouli Oud is shared and worn by anyone. It is a cold-weather, evening scent by nature, and suits someone who already likes patchouli or oud and wants them presented plainly, without fruit or sugar. It is sold in a 100 ml bottle.
