Version Sport

Version Sport by the French brand Ulric de Varens, released in 2019, is a green, tea-tinged scent for men with a leathery base. Green is the word everyone uses; about half also call it gourmand and citrusy, and a minority find it resinous, aromatic or leathery.

Bergamot, lime and apple open it with crisp, juicy freshness, and pink pepper adds a rosy tingle. The heart is herbal and dry: black tea and tea for a leafy, slightly tannic calm, clary sage for a musky green and lavender for a clean aromatic lift. The base is warmer and more interesting than the name suggests: olibanum (frankincense) for a dry, lemony smoke, leather for a supple grip, oakmoss and patchouli for earthy depth and tonka bean for a soft almond sweetness.

It wears as a fresh daytime scent with a surprisingly grown-up dry-down, suited to spring and autumn and to someone who likes green tea fragrances with wood and leather beneath them.
