Shaghaf Oud Aswad, from Swiss Arabian in 2018, is a dark woody oud. Woody is the word everyone uses; most also find it spicy and floral, and a minority pick up sweetness, amber and leather in the base.
It opens with rose and saffron over woody notes, so the first impression is a warm, slightly medicinal spice wrapped around a red flower. The heart is agarwood with more rose, plus coriander and cumin, which give it an earthy, slightly sweaty animal warmth. The base keeps the oud going over leather, amber and sandalwood, smoothing the roughness into something sweeter and more rounded.
Most wearers report long-lasting to near-permanent wear, and projection is strong to enormous, so one or two sprays are plenty. It is voted firmly for winter and autumn and for the evening. Worn by anyone, it suits cold nights and people who want a traditional, full-strength oud rather than a soft Western interpretation.
