A rose with thorns is the usual shorthand, and La Fille de Berlin from Serge Lutens, composed by Christopher Sheldrake in 2013, earns it. Floral is how everyone describes it, with about half of wearers also finding it sweet, green and woody. It is made to be worn by anyone.
Rose and geranium open together, the geranium adding a green, slightly metallic, peppery sharpness to a rose that is already full-bodied rather than dainty. Palmarosa in the heart, a grassy oil that smells rose-like itself, keeps the flower going and gives it a lemony, herbal edge. The base is where the darkness comes in: honey for a thick, animalic sweetness, patchouli for earth and moss for a damp, forest-floor dryness.
About half of wearers call the longevity moderate and a fair number find it long lasting, while most describe the sillage as moderate. Autumn and spring share the top votes, and day and night are almost even, so it is a rose for transitional weather that works as easily at dinner as in the afternoon.
