Essence de Patchouli by Perris Monte Carlo, released in 2012, is a patchouli dressed with rose and iris. Everyone who describes it calls it woody and floral in equal measure, and a third also find it musky and resinous.
Patchouli is the centre, dark, earthy and slightly sweet, with the dry, cocoa-like quality of aged patchouli rather than the raw, damp kind. Rose and geranium sit in the heart, adding a rosy, slightly green floral tone that brightens the earthiness, and iris adds a cool, powdery softness. The base is warm and dry at once: labdanum brings a sticky, ambery resin, coumarin a sweet, hay-like note, cedar and guaiac wood a dry, slightly smoky woodiness, and musk a soft finish.
It is a shared fragrance, worn by anyone. The warmth of the labdanum and the depth of the patchouli suggest autumn and winter wear, and it suits people who like patchouli as a refined, woody material rather than a headshop smell, and who want a rose kept in the background.
