Encode

Encode is a 2022 men's fragrance from Maison Alhambra built around cocoa and leather. Everyone who describes it says woody, and about half add spicy, sweet, ambery, leathery or citrus, so it balances several directions at once.

Bergamot opens it with a clean citrus, and sage gives a herbal, slightly bitter greenness alongside it. Pepper brings the spice, dry and sharp. Cacao pod and cocoa are the heart, bitter and powdery rather than sweet like chocolate, and they sit over a base of leather, patchouli and vetiver, which together read as dark, earthy and faintly smoky. Ambroxan gives the whole thing a radiant, mineral warmth that carries it off the skin.

Longevity and sillage have not yet been reported, though ambroxan-based structures are generally persistent. The cocoa and leather point to autumn and winter and the evening, and it is aimed at men who prefer their sweetness dark and dry.
