Joop Homme, composed by Michel Almairac in 1989, is a sweet, powerful men's scent that has little in common with the fresh style that followed it. Wearers describe it as gourmand, woody, floral and citrus all at once, about two thirds add spicy, and a third musky.

It opens with orange blossom, mandarin, bergamot and Amalfi lemon, a bright, honeyed citrus that is already sweeter than most men's openings. The heart is floral and spiced: heliotrope gives a powdery, almond-like sweetness, jasmine and lily of the valley a soft bouquet, and cinnamon and cardamom a warm, aromatic spice. The base is where the weight sits, with tonka bean, vanilla and honey for a thick sweetness, tobacco and patchouli for a dark, smoky depth, and sandalwood and vetiver for a dry woody floor.

Performance is its reputation: wearers are split between eternal and long lasting, and sillage is strong or enormous for most. It is voted for winter and autumn and for night, which makes it a cold-weather evening scent to apply sparingly.
