Eau de Citron Noir is a smoky citrus from Hermès, composed by Christine Nagel and worn by anyone. Citrus is the impression everyone shares, about half also find it green, and a minority notice the woody side.

The idea is lemon in two states. Fresh lemon, lime and citron give a sharp, zesty, almost sour brightness at the start. Black lemon, the dried, fermented fruit used in cooking, brings something quite different: a dark, tangy, slightly earthy sourness with a faint smokiness. Black tea reinforces that dry, tannic, smoky quality, and guaiac wood underneath adds a soft, tar-like woodiness that gives the whole thing a shadow without making it heavy.

Most wearers find the longevity moderate to weak and the sillage moderate to intimate, so it stays close and fades within a few hours, as a light citrus usually does. It is voted mostly for daytime and for summer and spring, which fits a bright, unusual lemon for hot days and anyone who finds ordinary colognes too simple.
