Black pepper gives the scent its first and strongest character: dry, sharp and warming rather than sweet. Leather adds a smooth, slightly smoky depth beneath it, and cedar provides a clean, pencil-shaving woodiness that keeps the whole thing structured and dry. With only a few materials in play, the scent is direct and legible, and each element is easy to pick out from the first spray to the drydown.
