Othello

Othello from Il Profvmo, composed by Silvana Casoli and released in 2016, is a dark, sweet wood. Everyone who describes it calls it sweet and woody together, and about half add amber and leather.

Passionfruit opens it with a tart, tropical brightness that is quickly folded into something heavier. Honey is the sweetness here, thick and slightly animalic rather than sugary. Datura, a night-blooming flower, adds a heady, narcotic floral note in the middle. The base is what gives it its character: agarwood, or oud, dark and smoky, birch with its tarry, leathery smoke, incense dry and resinous, and patchouli earthy and damp. The honey wraps around the smoke and leather, which is where the amber and leather impressions come from.

Marketed for men, it suits cold weather and evening wear, and a person who likes rich, smoky, slightly animalic fragrances and is not put off by honey.
